The Bob Baker Marionette Theater continues its 51st season as the nation’s oldest ongoing puppet theater with the perennial audience favorite MAGIC STRINGS, featuring new production numbers for summer audiences beginning June 25. BOB BAKER’S HALLOWEEN HOOP-DE–DO returns October 1, 2011, and will play through November 6. The 51st season will conclude with one of Baker’s most requested productions, BOB BAKER’S HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR, opening November 12, 2011 and playing throughout the holiday season.
MAGIC STRINGS is very special to The Bob Baker Marionette Theater, and has entertained audiences for generations in the Theater’s now famous “In-the-Round” cabaret style, with the puppeteers not only exposed to the audience, but serving as an integral part of the show . . . and also making the audience part of the show.
The production features over 100 of Bob Baker’s exquisite marionettes in a fun filled hour-long variety revue including puppet horses frolicking on an old-fashioned merry-go-round, a roller skating opera diva and a grand finale that is a red, white and blue celebration of America. After the performance, guests are invited to have refreshments in the Party Room. Beginning June 25, Baker will be adding new fantastical production numbers to the show.
One of the theater’s perennial favorites, “Bob Baker’s Halloween Hoop-De-Do” returns October 1, 2011,playing through November 6. This Halloween extravaganza first played the theater in 1963. Featuring an incredible cast of over 100 Halloween themed puppets, from the Purple People Eater and the Invisible Man to a gaggle of Roaring 20's skeletons dancing the night away in Hernando's Hideaway, “Bob Baker’s Halloween Hoop-De-Do” will whisk you away to “the place where imagination dwells.”
The Holiday Season will be ushered in by the theater with BOB BAKER’S HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR opening November 12. One of Baker’s most requested shows, the production is “M.C’d” by the Wizard of Fantasy and his side kick Demi Star, and features everything from the eight days of Chanukah to a trip to Santa’s Workshop – a production guaranteed to bring out the holiday spirit in children of all ages!
The Bob Baker Marionette Theater was voted by LA Parent Magazine as the “Best Children’s Theatre of 2010”, and Jennifer Steinhauer of The New York Times has described Baker’s shows as “a staple of a Los Angeleno childhood. It is the cultural equivalent of the annual march by the nation’s third graders to the neighborhood firehouse.”
The Bob Baker Marionette Theater in downtown Los Angeles is the oldest of its kind in the United States and has been entertaining children of all ages since its inception in 1960. At that time, Bob Baker and his business partner Alton Wood turned a scene shop in Los Angeles into the family entertainment landmark that it is today. On June 3, 2009, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater was declared an historic cultural monument by the City of Los Angeles.
